Organic castor oil you can trace back to the farm
Grasses of Life Organic Castor Oil is Southern Cross Certified organic, Fair for Life certified fair trade and hexane free. It is single origin: every batch comes from the same farms and the same factory, so the oil you buy today matches the oil you bought last year.
Our founder, naturopath Scott Collins, has visited the farms and the pressing facility in India in person. We know who grows our seed, how it is pressed and what goes into every bottle.
Pressed at room temperature
Many oils sold as “cold pressed” reach 60–90°C from friction during pressing. Our castor oil is made on a low-temperature cold press that our producer developed in-house through years of trial and error. It keeps the oil at room temperature throughout processing.
The result is a clear, pale virgin oil with a mild, nutty aroma. The press line handles organic seed only, so there is no risk of cross-contamination with conventional seed.
Hand-cleaned seed, nothing else
Castor seeds are grown in the Kutch region of north-west India. At harvest, each farmer cleans the seed by hand, removing the hull and shell. Only clean seed goes into the press. Many producers press the whole fruit, hull and all.
Fair to the farmers who grow it
Our seed comes from a cooperative of around 700 contracted farmers. Under the Fair for Life program they are paid above market rates, with fair pay and human rights assured, and a share of income goes back into their communities.
Every bag of seed is tagged and traceable to its farm and harvest date. That record is cross-checked against the organic certification tracking, so the chain from field to bottle is documented.
